Sunhead solar logo Sunhead solar alternate

About this project:

As we discussed in class and learned from the book, a simple-yet-distinct design using minimal colors is ideal for a logo. I chose a circle with the faint image of an outlet in it as my logo. I intended for my circle to represent the sun and I created it with varying shades of yellow and orange to make it more interesting and appealing, but I tried to keep the colors similar enough that it would still be recognizable as a one or two-color image or in black-and-white.

The bright yellows and oranges as the color motifs of this logo seemed like a natural choice for a solar-power company. I wanted to place the outlet in the sun as a (not-so-subtle) metaphor for the company’s purpose. I went through several fonts before I chose the one on the logo, the Girl Next Door. I know it’s a little playful for a business font but I felt that it matched well with the bright colors and the light-hearted connotation they have. Other fonts seemed to serious for the logo.

I assume the intended audience for a solar power installation is an environmentally friendly and eco-conscious person or company. The logo image conveys that Sunhead is also eco-conscious and it simultaneous communicates to the audience what Sunhead does. I chose to make the outlet a light pink/off-white color instead of black because the black was very severe on the image, and if solar power is about leaving a smaller carbon footprint, it seemed appropriate that the outlet be faded.

I gave the outlet inner and outer glow and I feathered it to make it light and semi-transparent. I used the “type on a path” tool for the company name because I like it altogether as one image, and because the orange text looks almost like sun rays. I’m happy with the logo because I think it appropriately represents a company that’s concerned with the environment, it shows any viewer what Sunhead is and because it’s memorable.
